How I Got Into Memory Techniques (My Full Story)
When people ask me how I improved my memory, I usually give them a very short summary of my story. My full story takes a lot more time to tell, but there are parts of my story that I don't like talking about because it makes me feel uneasy and brings back horrible memories.
But I want to share my full story with you to show you and everyone that you can improve your memory no matter what. The video below is about 30 minutes long! I really wanted to go into great detail explaining everything that happened when I was trying to improve my memory. I didn't want to hold anything back especially when I talk about the hard times.
You should listen to my whole story because there is a lot to learn from it. You can play the video in the background or take 30 minutes out of your day to watch the whole thing. Below the video, I will include a summary of my story just in case you don't have time to listen to the 30 minute video.
My Memory Journey Story
I recommend watching the video because there is so much more information than the summary below. Here is the summary for the main parts from my story:
Most people think I am some sort of memory genius or was born with a fantastic memory, but this couldn't be further from the truth! These people only see where my memory currently is and not were my memory was. I started training my memory 7 years ago when I was in high school.
I finished high school as student of the year, valedictorian, and presidential scholar. Seeing how I finished high school, you would think that school came easy for me, but it was the exact opposite. School was tough for me because I would spend hours upon hours of studying in order to keep straight A's and get perfect scores.
From 8th to 10th grade, these 3 years were the worst years of my life. I had so stressed and was worried all the time because I didn't want to miss a single point on HW or quizzes/tests. Plus I spent so much time studying every single day. All of this added up to me making myself sick.
I was so sick that I couldn't eat breakfast before school. Every time I tried to eat, I wanted to throw up because of all the anxiety I had from school. This was my life for 3 years. It took a mental toll on me everyday, and I hated every minute of it. This was the hardest thing I have ever went through in my life.
In my junior year, I discovered something that changed my life...working out! I feel in love with working out because nothing else mattered when I was exercising. I didn't think about studying, HW, school, or anything that stressed me out. It brought me peace of mind.
Then one day I thought to myself, "Is there a way to workout your mind?" At the time, I thought working out your mind meant you could learn faster and remember for longer. By chance, my brother told me about memory competitions, so I went and did more research about them.
I was hooked! I couldn't believe people were able to memorize a deck of cards in minutes, hundreds of digits in 5 minutes, and much more. But I thought these people were gifted with this memory ability because I never met anyone who could do something like that.
One day I decided to give it a try and see if I could improve my memory. I sat down in my room and created my card system plus my first memory palace. It took me 30 minutes to memorize my first deck of cards. I was speechless when I recalled the deck of cards perfectly! I thought this was impossible for me to do, but I just managed to do it!
I started to think, "Hey if I can remember a deck of cards in 5 minutes, then learning 20 Spanish vocabulary words wouldn't be that hard!" I started to apply memory techniques in school and what happened next was amazing...
Stress... Gone! Having anxiety... Gone! I wasn't studying much at all now because I was using memory techniques all the time. I knew where all the information was in my head, and I was having fun learning! Memory techniques completely changed school but also my life!
I wasn't sick anymore. I could eat breakfast! When I went to collage, I didn't have any anxiety or stress from school at all. All of my friends were upset with me because they would spend hours studying only to get a grade they didn't want, while I study barely and got A's!
But memory techniques changed my life in more ways than just school. I have seen the world such as London and China because of my memory skill. I have made a huge impact on my business because I am able to remember names and personal information about the people I meet.
The best part is helping other people improve their memories! A lot of people I teach think they can't improve their memories, just like I thought, but when they see their memories are better than they thought, it brings me so much joy! I have taught children to senior citizens and everyone in between on how to improve their memories.
I never knew memory techniques would save my life and open new opportunities to me. Improving my memory gave me confidence with my mind. I know improving your memory can make the same impact on your life as it did mine!
